My first artistic love was
photography. I am best when I take an existing piece of the world and twist it
into what I think it wants to be. I have trouble creating imaginary imagery
like a painter would but when something is in front of me I can change the
angle or take just a part of it and make it my own. I also loved the solitary
aspect of the darkroom and taking the image from conception to
product. Two years ago I closed up my darkroom and have begun working
in digital photography. So far I am finding a great freedom in being
able to see immediately whether or not I captured the image I was hoping
to.
The body
of work that has driven my photography for the past 15 years is the
documentation of the various relationships between people and animals.
This ongoing series is my passion. It has formed a lifestyle for me
that influences my politics as well as my everyday living.
Along
the way I have discovered that there are other fascinating things to photograph
and create just for fun. I have discovered other mediums and jewelry that help
keep those creative urges calm when I cannot get out to make the animal images.
I call this other work "A Need to Create" because that is where it
comes from.
The
button bracelets have become an obsession. There are hardly two alike as I use
what buttons I have in stock at that moment. The buttons can be vintage or new.
I find that the color palette changes with the seasons and I vary making chunky
or more delicate styles based on what I am into at that moment.
As
for earrings, can you ever have too many? I love making them and love wearing
them even more. I try to make them unique and versatile as that is what I would
wear.
The encaustic paintings are created
using hot tools and bricks of colored wax. I use a small iron and a stylus with
different tips made especially for this purpose. The bricks are rubbed directly
on the hot surface and then applied in layers to the paper. The movements are
broad and energetic so it a very cathartic experience. Each piece is one of a
kind because I could never make them exactly the same twice! That is the beauty
of it!
